“Um, we need to be on board one of the barges,” said Max, growing weary of the corporate advertising blitz. “Guys? Follow me.”

She led the way down to the dock. Alexei, Klaus, Siobhan, and Leo were right behind her. Charl and Isabl flanked the CMI kids, scanning the crowd, looking for any potential trouble. Anna and Mr. Woodside brought up the rear so they could keep working the press mob trailing behind Max and the team.

There were seventy-two flatboats lined up in the harbor. All of them bright white and flying BPW Petroleum banners.

“What are those big things in their sterns?” asked a reporter from CNN. “They look like jet engines.”

Anna turned to the team’s trusty robot. “Leo? Can you download the deets?”

“Of course.” The automaton with the face of a choirboy turned to the cluster of cameras and microphones. They all pushed in for a close-up. Super smart, chattering robots made good TV. “Those are modified turbines, each equipped with one hundred high-pressure nozzles that will spray trillions of nano-sized ocean salt crystals up into the air. As the water droplets evaporate, bright salt crystals will remain to reflect away incoming solar radiation.”

“Think of it as a giant pair of mirrored sunglasses for the coral reef,” offered Alexei, repeating his easy-to-understand analogy. The press corps looked like they loved that simple way to explain the science to their audiences. Several reporters scribbled Alexei’s words on their notepads.

“That’s right,” said Leo. “Scaled up, this marine cloud–brightening technique could shade and cool the Great Barrier Reef, protecting its coral from the dangerous bleaching caused by rising global temperatures.”

“We could also build spray towers on land,” said Siobhan, “all along the shoreline. We could float them on barges.”

“Like brave firefighters everywhere,” said Alexei, “we can spray the ocean’s salt water to help cool down and, eventually, extinguish global warming.”
